Thoughts on WIRES AND NERVE

WIRES AND NERVE by Marissa Meyer is a sequel graphic novel to THE LUNAR CHRONICLES. While all the protagonists of those books return, the true hero of the comic series is Iko, the Pinocchio-like android from the original series as she deals with the aftermath of the revolution her and her friends caused and prejudice due to the fact that she’s an android. On top of all that the “malfunction” that gives her more personality than most androids is surfacing and turning her more and more human, to the point that she starts to develop feelings for one of the evil queen’s former guards. The problem is he claims he doesn’t believe android have feelings and considers them sub human (I expect this will change since he’s starting to develop feelings for her as well).
Characterization-wise I have no complaints. I loved all these characters in THE LUNAR CHRONICLES and continue to love them in WIRES AND NERVE. The couples continue to be adorable, the world continues to expand and the plot is well-paced. The only element I have a problem with is the art. It isn’t bad, but Meyer’s artist can only draw about one face and it took me a minute to be able to tell all the characters apart and I’ve read the entire series and the short stories that go with it. I can’t imagine being a new reader and jumping into the story without any of that prior knowledge. The first volume also ends on a cliffhanger, which is kind of annoying.
Despite the minor flaws though, WIRES AND NERVE was a Good book and I highly recommend picking it up, but only if you’ve at least read all four books in THE LUNAR CHRONICLES series first.
